Debates on the dangers of creationism and the concept of preventive war
Turkish and Montenegrin Presidents, Serb Prime Minister and Patriarch Alexy II to address PACE

The newly-elected Turkish President Abdullah Gül will address the Assembly on 3 October at its autumn session (Strasbourg, 1-5 October 2007). Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Russia (2 October), Montenegrin President Filip Vujanović (1 October) and Serb Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica (2 October) are also due to address the Assembly.

Vuk Jeremić, Foreign Minister of Serbia and Chairperson of the organisation’s Committee of Ministers, as well as the President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Gholamali Haddad Adel are due to speak on 4 October, as foreseen on the Assembly agenda.  (More)

René van der Linden made an official visit to the three Baltic countries from 18 to 24 September 2007, during which he discussed the broader role of the Council of Europe in promoting the common values of human rights and democracy, avoiding the creation of new dividing lines in Europe, inter-cultural and interreligious dialogue and minority questions.

Appeal to avoid further bloodshed
PACE President appeals for immediate end to violence in Burma

'I am extremely concerned and upset to learn that the Burma/Myanmar government is using violence against some of the demonstrators,' PACE President Renè van der Linden said in a statement today. 'I appeal to it to avoid further bloodshed at all costs. To gun down people committed to non-violence, who are protesting peacefully, is utterly unacceptable', he said. (More)

Polish opposition to a European Day against the Death Penalty is 'unacceptable'

PACE President René van der Linden qualified the Polish opposition to a European Day against the Death Penalty as “unacceptable” and condemned the Polish government’s position. “By taking this position, the Polish government prevents other EU member states from sending a clear signal to all those countries in the world which still apply capital punishment. The same goes for the larger 47-member Council of Europe, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a death-penalty-free zone. (More)

A crucial election for democratic credibility
PACE to observe parliamentary elections in Ukraine

A 27-member PACE delegation led by Hanne Severinsen (Denmark, ALDL) will observe the parliamentary elections on Sunday 30 September in Ukraine alongside observers from the OSCE and NATO Parliamentary Assemblies, the European Parliament and the ODIHR. The members of the delegation will meet representatives of the contending political parties, of the Central Electoral Commission, and of NGOs and the media, before travelling to the different areas of the country to observe the conduct of the ballot on polling day.
