The Bureau of the Assembly, meeting in Strasbourg on 3 April 2000 with Lord Russell-Johnston in the chair,

-                     following an application from the Monitoring Committee, expressed itself against initiating a monitoring procedure for Austria;

-                     up-dated the draft order of business of the Assembly's April 2000 part-session and expressed itself in favour of holding a current affairs debate on the political situation in Austria and a debate under urgent procedure on marine and river pollution by hydrocarbons and dangerous substances;

-                     heard a statement by Lord Judd (United Kingdom, SOC) on the mission to Moscow and the Northern Caucasus  (8 - 13 March 2000) of the ad hoc Committee on follow-up to Assembly

Recommendation 1444 (2000);

-                     took note of and declassified the report on the observation of the presidential elections in Russia (26 March 2000);

-           approved the draft progress report of the Bureau presented by Mr Surjan (Hungary, EPP/CD);

-                     took note of the calendar for the election procedure of the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly;

-                     agreed to hold its next meeting on 7 April at 8 am in Strasbourg.
