The Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men, meeting in Strasbourg on 26 April 2001 with Mrs Err (Luxembourg, Soc) in the Chair, as regards: 

-          Female genital mutilation (Rapporteur: Mrs Vermot-Mangold, Switzerland, SOC):  considered a draft report and adopted a preliminary draft resolution;

-                     Domestic slavery (Rapporteur: Mr Connor, Ireland, EPP/CD): considered a draft report and adopted a preliminary draft recommendation and a preliminary draft order;

-                     Hearing on trafficking in women: held an exchange of views on the follow-up to the hearing held on 2 April 2001 in Paris ;

-                     Meeting of the Committee in Turkey (21 May 2001):  discussed the agenda of the meeting ;

-                     Declaration of the Committee on the decision of the US President Bush  to ban federal funds to international family planning groups : approved a declaration;

-                     Work programme: held an exchange of views;

-                     Appointment of rapporteurs :

o       Ms Herczog (Hungary, SOC) on rights of women and ethical, socio-cultural risks and consequences of new technologies based on women’s eggs and embryos;

o       Ms Cryer (United Kingdom, SOC) on Fundamentalist interpretation of Sharia law (for opinion);

-                     Appointment of representatives to meetings :

o              Ms Granlund (Sweden, SOC) to attend the European Law Conference (Stockolm, 10-12 June 2001);

o              Ms Err (Luxembourg, SOC) to attend the Seminar “Perspectives of public initiatives on preventing trafficking in women” (Kyiv, 12-13 June 2001);

o              Ms Err (Luxembourg, SOC) and Mr Connor (Ireland, EPP/DC) to hold a hearing at the Plate forme on modern slavery, (National Assembly, Paris, 21 June 2001);

o              Ms Druziuk (Ukraine, UEL) and Ms Herczog (Hungary, SOC) to attend the Joint NGO/Parliamentarians’ Conference on “Citizenship, solidarity: what sort of Europe do we want?” (Strasbourg, 6-7 November 2001);

-                     its next meetings, decided to meet as follows:

·           Istanbul, during the Spring session of the Assembly (21 May 2001);

·           Strasbourg, during the Assembly 2001 third part-session (25-29 June);

·           Paris, Thursday 6 September 2001 (Council of Europe Office);

·           Strasbourg, during the Assembly 2001 fourth part-session (24-28 September);

·           Bratislava, 22-23 October 2001 (subject to the authorisation of the Bureau).
