The Political Affairs Committee, meeting in Strasbourg on 22, 23 and 25 January 2001, under the chairmanship of Mr Wielowieyski (Poland, EPP/CD), oldest member present, then Mr Davis,
re-elected Mr Davis (United Kingdom, SOC) Chairman by acclamation;
elected by acclamation Mr Eörsi (Hungry, LDR) first Vice-Chairman;
re-elected by acclamation:

As regards:
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia – recent developments (Rapporteur: Mr Frey, Switzerland, LDR): took position on the amendments to the draft recommendation and to the draft resolution, authorised the Rapporteur to take position with the Chairman on the remaining amendments, took note of the Committee of Ministers’ call for an opinion on this country’s request for Council of Europe membership, and decided to appoint a rapporteur at one of its future meetings;
Conflict in the Chechen Republic – recent developments (Rapporteur: Lord Judd, United Kingdom, SOC): took position on the amendments to the draft Resolution and Recommendation;
Credentials of the delegation of the Russian Federation: appointed Mr Eörsi (Hungary, LDR) Rapporteur, adopted a draft report and took position on an amendment to the draft Resolution;
Situation in Belarus (Rapporteur: Mr Behrendt, Germany, SOC): held an exchange of views with representatives of the Parliament of Belarus and also with representatives of the opposition who are not members of parliament;
Situation in Algeria (Rapporteur: Mr Atkinson, United Kingdom, EDG): decided to request the Bureau’s authorisation for the rapporteur to visit the country from 3 to 6 February 2001;

As regards :
Relations with the Japanese Parliament (Rapporteur: Mr Baumel, France, EDG): prepared the visit by the Sub-Committee to Japan (5 - 10 February 2001);
Situation in Algeria (Rapporteur: Mr Atkinson, United Kingdom, EDG): heard a statement by the Rapporteur who will visit the country from 3 to 6 February 2001;
The United Nation at the Turn of the New Century (Rapporteur: Mrs Severinsen, Denmark, LDR): heard a statement by the Rapporteur on the question of the “formal recognition of the Council of Europe as regional organisation”, and decided to continue the examination of this question at its next meeting;
decided to hold its next meetings as follows:

The Situation in the Middle East (Rapporteur: Mr Taylor, United Kingdom, EPP/CD): held an exchange of views with Mr. Edelshtein, member of the Knesset, decided to hold a hearing in Paris on 12 March 2001, open to members of the Plenary Committee, and to prepare a visit by the Sub-Committee to the Middle East (March 2001)
decided to hold its next meeting as follows:
Israel and the Territories under the control of the Palestinian National Authority (March 2001).
