The Political Affairs Committee, meeting in Strasbourg on 24 and 26 April 2001, under the Chairmanship of Mr Terry Davis (United Kingdom, SOC) :
elected Mr Roman Jakic (Slovenia, LDR), 1st Vice-Chairman of the Committee, by acclamation ;
As regards :
Request for Council of Europe membership – Principality of Monaco (Rapporteur : Mrs Kristiina Ojuland, Estonia, LDR) : heard a statement by the rapport on her visit in Monaco on19 and 20 March 2001, and decided to declassify the memorandum by the rapporteurs;
Joint Working Group on Chechnya of the Parliamentary Assembly and of the State Duma :
heard a statement by Lord Judd and Mr Rogozin, Co-Chairmen, on the activities of the Group;
Appointed provisionally Mr David Atkinson (United Kingdom, EDG) as a member of the Joint Working Group;
Situation in Kosovo and in the neighbouring regions (Rapporteur : Mrs Tarja Kautto, Finland, SOC) : took position on the amendments to the draft Resolution;
Middle-East Conflict (Rapporteur : Mr John D. Taylor, United Kingdom, EPP/CD) : took position on the amendments to the draft Resolution, in the presence of Mr Lapid, Mr Rubinstein and Mr Sandberg, members of the Knesset, and Mr Abu Zayyad, member of the Palestinian Legislative Council;
Joint Seminar on “Democratic Reforms : Challenges for Parliamentarians”, together with the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association (Canada, Autumn 2001) : considered with members of the Canadian Observer delegation different issues of common interest for the possible organisation of the Seminar ;

The United Nations at the turn of the new Century (Rapporteur : Mrs Hanne Severinsen, Denmark, LDR) :
held an exchange of views with Mr Hans de Jonge, Director of External Relations of the Council of Europe, on the 4th UN-regional organisations high level meeting (New York, 6-7 February 2001);
held an exchange of views with Mr Roberto Lamponi, Head of the Legal Advice Department and Treaty Office of the Council of Europe, on the Assembly recommendation to the Committee of Ministers to regard the Council of Europe as a regional organisation within the meaning of Chapter VIII of the United Nations Charter;
Relations with the Japanese Parliament : held a discussion on the follow-up to be given to the visit of the Sub-Committee in Japan in February 2001;
