The Political Affairs Committee, meeting in Istanbul on 21 May 2001, under the chairmanship of Mr Roman Jakic, 1st Vice-Chairman, (Slovenia, LDR):
held an exchange of views with Mr Ismail Cem, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey;
As regards :
Request for Observer Status with the Parliamentary Assembly: Parliament of Kazakhstan (Rapporteur: Mr Tadeusz Iwinski, Poland, SOC): considered a draft report, decided to postpone the adoption of the draft Resolution, asked its rapporteur to prepare a revised version, and in the meantime decided to propose to the Bureau to establish a co-operation agreement with the Parliament of Kazakhstan;
Code of good practice in electoral matters (Rapporteur : Mr Georges Clerfayt, Belgium, LRD) : considered a draft Report, unanimously adopted a draft Resolution and decided to ask to Bureau to put this item on the agenda of the Standing Committee in November;
Request for membership of the Council of Europe: Bosnia and Herzegovina (Rapporteur: Mr László Surjan, Hungary, EPP/CD): was informed that Mr Wolfgang Petritsch, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, had accepted the Chairman’s invitation to participate in an exchange of views at its meeting on 23 June 2001 (Strasbourg) and decided to hold an in-depth discussion on a draft Report on that occasion;
Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe: heard a statement by Mr András Bársony (Hungary, SOC), representative of the Parliamentary Assembly to Working Table I on Human Rights and Democratisation, on the last meeting of Working Table I (Portoroz, 14-15 May 2001), expressed concern over the fact that the new priorities fixed did not include parliamentary co-operation, took note that Mr Bársony would represent the President of the Parliamentary Assembly at the first meeting of the “Troika sponsors” of the parliamentary co-operation Task Force to be held in Brussels on 5 June 2001, and invited him to report back to the Committee on the results of that meeting;
NGO / Parliamentarians Conference on “Citizenship, solidarity : what sort of Europe do we want ?” (Strasbourg, 6-7 November 2001): appointed Mr Jordi Solé Tura (Spain, SOC) and Mr Andrzej Wielowieyski (Poland, EPP/CD) to represent it in the ad hoc Committee that would participate in the Conference;
