Political transition in Tunisia: fact-finding visit by rapporteur to Tunis

George Loucaides (Cyprus, UEL), rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), will make a fact-finding visit to Tunis from 27 to 30 March 2017 in connection with the preparation of his report on political transition in Tunisia.

The discussions will mainly focus on the progress made with the rule of law since the entry into force of the constitution of 27 January 2014.

During his visit, Mr Loucaides is due to meet the President of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Interior and Justice, and the Minister for Constitutional Bodies, Civil Society and Human Rights.

Talks are also planned with the Chairs of the parliamentary blocs and parliamentary committees and with representatives of independent constitutional bodies, trade unions, the diplomatic community, NGOs and the media.

The PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy will consider Mr Loucaides’s report next month.

This will be the first visit by a PACE rapporteur concerning the situation in Tunisia since 2012. PACE adopted a resolution on political transition in Tunisia that year.
