PACE spells out national steps to reduce climate change

PACE has issued a strong call for national measures to cut global warming emissions through the Paris climate change agreement – and for Council of Europe countries to take the lead.

Approving a resolution based on a report by John Prescott (United Kingdom, SOC), the Assembly called for ambitious national strategies and action plans to mainstream sustainable development, promote a “circular economy”, develop environment-friendly “smart cities” and estuaries, foster sustainable agriculture and private sector participation, and restructure energy consumption to replace fossil fuels with renewables.

The Assembly also called on governments to involve national parliamentarians in global climate change negotiations, and on parliaments to ensure national targets were being met.
