PACE President welcomes the release of Turkish MP Enis Berberoglu due to parliamentary immunity

Liliane Maury Pasquier, President of the Parliamentary Assembly, welcomed the decision of the Turkish Supreme Court of Cassation to release newly re-elected MP Enis Berberoglu, from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), until the end of his parliamentary mandate. “Acknowledging parliamentary immunity granted to MPs ensures that elected representatives can exercise their mandate in parliament, which is a fundamental right in a democracy”, she said.

"I remain determined to launch constructive discussions with the Turkish authorities to ensure that parliamentarians and former parliamentarians who are still in detention can be released".

PACE President had called on the Turkish authorities to release deputies and former deputies in prison in a statement of 12 September 2018.
