On non-recognition by Romania of the Moldovans’ right to national identity

We, the undersigned, express our concern about the Romanian policy on non-recognition of Moldovan ethnicity and disrespect for the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova.

Although Romania was the first country that recognised the independence of the Republic of Moldova, the policy of the Romanian authorities, however, is aimed at undermining and disrespecting its right to a national identity.

We, the undersigned, note that, lately, Romanian high-level officials have been making statements that can be qualified as ultra nationalistic and inconsistent with the standards and principles of the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the United Nations.

We state with concern that the Romanian authorities’ policy on national and ethnic minorities is directed towards undermining the rights and freedoms of individuals belonging to, or identifying themselves as belonging to, certain national and ethnic groups.

In this context, the refusal of the Romanian authorities to register the community of Moldovans that inhabit the territory of Romania, as well as the intimidation of persons that identify themselves openly as belonging to the Moldovan ethnos, unrecognised by Romanian authorities, give rise to concern.

We consider as unacceptable the actions undertaken by the Romanian authorities to impose identity on people, as well as the non-recognition of the identity of people that identify themselves as Moldovans, both in Romania and beyond its borders.

We, the undersigned, request the Parliamentary Assembly to initiate activities to monitor the situation and to undertake actions to ensure respect by Romania for international principles and norms in the fields of international law and human rights.
