Motion for a resolution | Doc. 12674 | 29 June 2011
Call for a European-wide black list of condemned medical professionals
Doctors and other medical professionals must register in their home country and are subject to the suspension or removal of their registration in the event that they are found guilty of medical misconduct.
In the course of the past years a number of cases have emerged in which doctors have been convicted of misconduct in one country, have had their medical licence lifted and have proceeded to launch a new practice in another state. Some of these disgraced practitioners have gone on cause serious accidents and even to fatalities.
European Union member states are in a position to share information on medical misconduct, but this has unfortunately not prevented a number of recent cases.
The Parliamentary Assembly should propose a Europe-wide black list of medical professionals, who are banned from practising in a member state and devise appropriate enforcement measures, with due regard to privacy issues.
