Motion for a resolution | Doc. 14944 | 04 July 2019
Acting for the health of all through healthy and sustainable food and agriculture
World hunger is an undeniable reality. One in nine people, or 815 million people, is undernourished. Malnutrition is the cause of nearly half of all deaths of children under five years of age – 3.1 million children each year.
Malnutrition spreads many diseases, such as obesity and hypertension. Overweight affects 1.4 billion people aged 20 and over worldwide. By 2030, it is expected to reach 3.3 billion.
The objectives set by the 2030 Agenda open up avenues for combating hunger and malnutrition:
- Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger
- Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good health and well-being
- Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
To be able to consume sustainably and healthily for our health, we need to rethink the way we cultivate the land. Our resources are becoming more and more scarce and are degrading rapidly, with increasing pollution of soil, air and water affecting our health.
A change in our food and agriculture system is necessary if we are to feed the 815 million people who are hungry today, and all those affected by pollution from agriculture. Investing in sustainable agriculture, that provides healthy food while producing enough to feed the planet, is today a crucial imperative for the future of our planet and our humanity.
The Parliamentary Assembly has a duty to promote the development of a sustainable model of agriculture and food that would allow resources and energy to be used efficiently, to build sustainable infrastructures and a better health and quality of life for all.
