Justice and security for women in peace reconciliation

Slow and uneven progress in struggling for gender equality across member States is hampered, among other matters, by the endemic spots of conflicts. Civilian women and girls residing in “hot spots” are particular targets for intimidation and discrimination in active phases of military interventions and through restoring peace stages, where the latter do not obligatory mean community security for women and girls. These stages might last for decades in total, bringing everyday discrimination to all spheres of individual lives.

Justice is a key factor, which facilitates peace reconciliation and consecutively revives the millions of women’s lives across the continent and beyond.

The Parliamentary Assembly should review the action undertaken by member States to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, in particular in the contexts of peace reconciliation, by monitoring the adherence to general principles of transitional justice. Based on its findings, the Assembly should provide guidance on ending discrimination against women and girls in post-conflict societies and promote good practices in this field.
