MOTION FOR A RECOMMENDATION

on petrol tank protection systems

presented by Mr Friedrich PROBST and others

1.       Car accidents in which the petrol tank explodes are extremely serious. Even where the vehicle is at first only slightly on fire, no one can help because of the grave danger of a sudden tank explosion. The occupants burn to death, without the possibility of assistance.

2.       For some time now, tank protection systems have been available which can completely eliminate the possibility of an explosion. The systems cost very little to install (approx. $1 per litre tank capacity), so that legislation for newly-registered vehicles would seem highly justifiable. It is also quite easy to install the tank protection system in existing cars.

3.       The Assembly should therefore recommend to the Committee of Ministers that such tank protection systems be made compulsory for all newly-registered vehicles throughout the member states.
