Need for stronger political support in favour of tapping Europe's tourism potential
Motion for a resolution
presented by Mrs Stepova and others
This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it |
1. Two years after the adoption of the Assembly's Resolution 1148 (1998) on the need to accelerate the development of tourism in central and eastern Europe, unfortunately little has been done to grant tourism development policies greater prominence at European or national political level. By not creating the proper interplay between political guidance and support on the one hand and private market initiative on the other, many countries and regions are as a result losing precious time in developing their tourism potential along environmentally sound, employment-conducive and socially beneficial directions, capable of serving the larger purposes of peace and international understanding.
2. With this in mind, the Assembly calls on Council of Europe member states to implement the many recommendations set out in Resolution 1148 and to actively support the implementation of the 1999 Global Code of Ethics of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, aiming to promote "an equitable, responsible and sustainable world tourism order whose benefits will be shared by all". This also holds for the so-called Tourism Satellite Account, by which the real and rapidly growing importance of the tourism sector in the world economy can be better appreciated, and international comparisons and co-operation furthered.
